The Benefits of Reiki as a Complementary Cancer Therapy

I started working with cancer patients back during my Reiki Master Training in California. It included volunteering in the Breast Cancer Resource Center in Santa Barbara. A team of Reiki Masters and practitioners would offer relief, comfort, healing and hope to breast cancer battlers on an ongoing basis.

Patients were at all stages of cancer progression and some would come week after week, using Reiki integral to their overall recovery program.

Later on, cancer patients also entered my Reiki practice in Canada. It became increasingly clear that cancer patients have more access to Reiki when using distance healing treatment: they could receive it just before chemo, right after chemo, and any other time when they would feel weak and sick. Reiki would alleviate their side-effects of chemo and medication, and help strengthen their overall immune system to restore health and help restore balance.

Therefore, I was delighted when being approached by Emily Walsh, Outreach Director for the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance, based in Connecticut, who wanted to share her experience & expertise of how Reiki works for cancer patients:

The Benefits of Reiki as a Complementary Cancer Therapy

Now regarded as a quality treatment program by such previous skeptics as the American Cancer Society, Reiki is getting the attention it deserves concerning its application as a panacea to a variety of bodily ills. Partially in thanks to the work and authority of Dr. Mehmet Oz, sufferers of cancer can now benefit from Reiki’s many effects on bodily dysfunction and stress reduction, to provide themselves a low key way of relieving their symptoms and suppressing cancer growth.

Previously seen in light of the predominance for cancer patients to require invasive, chemical, and highly technological methods of treatment, lack of touching and the idea behind Reiki barred its entry into the halls of higher medicine for quite some time.

Not surprisingly, however, it is this facet of the amazing healing tool that is perhaps the most appealing to cancer patients. Weeks, months, or even years of harsh treatments make the need for a non-invasive, relaxing and effective treatment regimen all the greater.

Combining these non-invasive qualities of Reiki with its ability to reduce the discomfort and suffering of cancer patients, makes it an easy choice when deciding on its use as a complementary treatment program.

Many patients find that Reiki eases their nausea, most especially after chemotherapy, and prefer it to addling their livers with another pill or medicine designed to reduce chemotherapy related sickness.

This advice is not to be taken lightly, as the often daunting amount of medication taken during cancer, whether it be for direct treatment or symptom relief, takes its toll on the liver after time, and many cancer survivors struggle with this reality even after remission.

The benefits of Reiki on the body, and more acutely, on a cancer sufferer, do not hinge solely on comfort, however, and the real life efficacy of a qualified Reiki practitioner has been shown to consistently reduce inflammation in the body. From mesothelioma to even blood cancers such as lymphoma, the main culprit in contributing to the growth and spread of cancer is rampant inflammation.

Using Reiki to reduce the stress levels in the body, and to align the spiritual chakras, has been scientifically proven to stimulate the vagus nerve. This nerve is the often touted mind-body connection that has been tapped into by yogis and meditation masters for centuries, and vagus nerve stimulation, whether electrical or through holistic therapies such as Reiki, effectively reduces inflammation.

Reducing chronic levels of inflammation in the body influences life expectancy and quality of health in so many ways that one could easily fill a book on the subject. From overall quality of life, to the real age your body shows due to wear and tear, reduced levels of inflammation effectively control your overall health and can be the deciding factor in a number of other illnesses as well, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Head Massage and It’s Benefits

Head Massage and It’s Benefits

Article by Fred Green

We all know that the healing touch of a trained therapist is all our body needs to being the repair process, and that is especially true of a head massage. Also known as cranial sacral therapy, a head massage is an increasingly popular, safe and gentle treatment that targets the liquid and membranes surrounding the spinal column and skull.

It’s no big secret that the keys to good health include exercise, proper nutrition, less stress and avoiding harmful habits. But what about the suggestion that a healthy body and mind originates from the inside via our internal self-healing system? Our bodies are designed to defend us from disease and aid in the healing process, as when a cut heals or we fight off the effects of a cold or flu. Head massages are one form of a hands-on technique designed to assist the healing process.

So how does head massage therapy help? It utilizes a soft-touch technique to realign bones into correct placement. The pressure used in head massage therapy is comparable to that of what a nickel weighs. The procedure is believed to possess the power to address a number of medical ailments resulting in function loss and pain. Used as the main source of treatment, it is also used as an addition to alternative techniques.

Head massages – delivered by the hands of a trained professional – can help to:

* traumatic injuries to the spinal cord or brain; * migraine headaches; * chronic fatigue; * impairments of the motor coordination skills; * chronic back and neck pain; * central nervous system disorders; * joint dysfunction; * stress and tension related ailments; * Orthopedic problems.

The main goal of a head massage is to identify the cause and location of the discomfort while also relieving the pain. Head massage therapy – included in an ongoing healthy-body program is a gentle and effective way to increase energy, reduce the instances of illness and get a better night’s sleep.

So how does head massage therapy work? A trained massage therapist works with you to offer support to your body’s self-correcting instruments. Using the light-touch technique, your therapist will begin the head massage by evaluating your body’s cranial sacral system (membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord) which plays the important role of maintaining the environment where the central nervous system functions.

Because the spinal cord and brain are a part of the central nervous system, this area has powerful influence over a variety of body functions. So during a head massage, your therapist helps your body overcome obstacles that block it natural self correcting tendencies. To do so, he/she takes cues from your body regarding the treatment to follow, in a way that is extremely effective and safe.

Another attribute of the head massage is that less time is required, also making it a more affordable option with less investment of time and money. If you spend a lot of time on a computer each day, you know that at the end of the day, you can end of with knots created by tired, achy muscles. A neck massage can revitalize your body and eliminate the pain and harmful toxins typically caused by over-extension.

Simply put… by enjoying a head massage which takes about half the time of a full-session massage… your body will benefit from head to toe.

Benefits of a Shiatsu Massage

Article by John Strickland

Going for a massage can be extremely relaxing after a hard day at work when your muscles ache and your whole body is tense. One of the most effective methods of massage is Shiatsu. A shiatsu massage is sometimes referred to as an acupressure massage. This is because the fingers and palms or even knees and elbows are used to apply pressure to certain areas of discomfort, or trigger points that link to other parts of the body. The basis of shiatsu is to increase the flow of energy within ones body, which can improve your health and state of mind. The Chi, or energy, takes with it toxins if flowing properly within the body. If it is not, the toxins will just sit and cause health issues.

As with most types of massages, shiatsu can reduce anxiety and stress. This is done by manipulating parts of the body to correct imbalances within it. This can also reduce headaches and insomnia as stress can cause these issues. Because of the pressure and rubbing when the massage takes place, it can increase blood circulation, which can reduce blood pressure. Flexibility and mobility can also increase when the muscles are fully relaxed. It has even helped those with arthritis as shiatsu can be applied directly to the areas that are affected, especially the hands and feet.

Not only does your blood circulation benefit from a shiatsu massage, but it also improves the flow of nutrition to the cells. This is one reason why many pregnant women have used shiatsu since it can help bring more nutrients to the baby as well as relieve tired and sore muscles.

Shiatsu has also been thought to increase the glow and elasticity of one’s skin by stimulating the skin cells. Many think that this massage technique is a great alternative to cosmetic surgery.

Cranial Osteopathy and Benefits of Cranial Osteopathy Treatment

Cranial Osteopathy and Benefits of Cranial Osteopathy Treatment

Article by Jonathan Callinan

Cranial Osteopathy is considered a holistic treatment, as it not only conducts cures for the head but also provides treatment for the body as a whole. As can be seen below it may benefit a variety of physical and mental conditions, which can be successful for all ages, particularly for babies, children and individuals with severe or unresolved issues.

Cranial Osteopathy is one technique used to retain a sense of stability and equilibrium between the many interconnected systems and structures within our bodies. Moreover it provides natural pain relief for the body.

This form of Osteopathy, whilst being gentle has a powerful effect upon the deeper systems of the body, which incorporate the membranes, nerves and bones. Instant relief is often experienced throughout the whole body, when stress and tension is relieved, using these techniques.

Within the sessions, the Osteopath, via skilled ‘palpitation’, senses limitations in the movement patterns of the body’s structures and fluids. The intention upon finding any restrictions is to treat and alleviate any pain using realignment techniques, which also intends to restore sacral rhythm to optimum pace.

Cranial Osteopathy may benefit a wide range of physical and mental conditions including; Arthritis, Cerebral Palsy, Dyslexia, Headaches, Insomnia, Neck Pain, Sinusitis and Stress – emotional and physical.

At the initial consultation with the Osteopath the therapist will need to ascertain whether you may have any prior injuries or if you are currently taking any medication. In addition a physical assessment may be necessary and may entail testing reflexes, blood pressure and observing the clients standing and sitting posture and level of movement.

To examine the cranium, the head is typically gently held by the Osteopath, the Osteopath can then feel and discover how the body reacts to the realignment corrections. Furthermore the Osteopath by supporting the head senses the movement of the bones, thus determining the way the membranes move and how the spinal fluid circulates around the brain. By discovering this rhythm the Osteopath can work in unison with the client’s body.

Most people become deeply relaxed as the tension is gradually drawn out of their body. Once the Osteopath has determined where the problem is manifesting itself, they will give you an explanation, make a diagnosis of your condition, recommend a suitable course of treatment and you may be advised on any lifestyle or dietary changes which would compliment your treatment.

Side effects may occur and involve, light-headedness or a feeling of tiredness. These effects could last from a few minutes to up a day after the treatment. If the side effects continue for any longer than 24 hours, consult your Cranial Osteopath.

Cranial Osteopathy is proven to be a safe and beneficial therapy, which is used by people of all ages. The advantages of this therapy are widely acknowledged within the healthcare profession.

It is wise to research and select a therapist who is either a member of, or accredited by, an association or professional body. Cranial Osteopaths are obligated to a code of ethics and procedure that determines the therapy is carried out in a suitable and safe environment. These regulations guarantee a specialist who has undergone certifiable training and receives professional up-skilling.
